Rainbow in the Heart

On Thursday, the 25th of July at 5 p.m. Marjukka Irni’s photography exhibition Vikerkaar südames (Rainbow in the Heart) will be opened in the Tampere Maja gallery. The exhibition explores the meaning of role models in queer culture.

“In this inclusive art project I explore the meaning of role models, as it is especially important in queer culture. I am interested in what kinds of role models members of the LGBTQIA community have had over the years, when media didn’t offer relatable content.

It is essential to share feelings of otherness, because for many queer people the lack of belonging and community is all too familiar, leading to loneliness.

The situation in Estonia is even more difficult than in Finland, and there especially older LGBTQIA people are afraid to come out because of discrimination. In this project I have created a safe space where the participants have had the opportunity to be seen as their true selves without having to fear discrimination. These pictures taken in both Estonia and Finland create space for an interesting discussion.

The participants’ role models and relating texts can be found next to the portraits.

This exhibition, realized through the means of participatory art, continues Irni’s line of communal works, where the goal is to influence society with art.

Artist and art therapist Marjukka Irni’s photographs can be found in the Tampere Maja gallery from 25.07 to 18.08.2024. A related conversation event will take place on Thursday, the 16th of August.

This exhibition was supported by The Finnish Culture Fund and Turu Art Foundation
