Everyone Can Write a Song
Concert of Heikki Salo and Tuija Rantalainen’s Songwriting Camp in Tartu on Saturday, May 3
Can I write a song if I’ve never done it before? This is the question asked at the songwriting camp led by Heikki Salo and Tuija Rantalainen. The camp gathers at Tampere House in Tartu during Walpurgis Night, and the participants will perform the songs created at the camp during a final concert on Saturday, May 3 at 8 p.m. in the courtyard of Tampere House (address: Jaani 4, Tartu).
Heikki Salo and Tuija Rantalainen are both well-known Finnish musicians. Heikki Salo is especially known as the frontman of the Finnish band Miljoonasade. Tuija Rantalainen is a Finnish pianist, singer, and songwriter.
Salo and Rantalainen have been organizing songwriting courses for 15 years. The camp is aimed at people who want to write their own lyrics and compose music. The idea of the camp is based on a quote by the well-known Finnish songwriter Veikko Lavi: “Every person is worth a song.”
Over the years, hundreds of songwriters have participated in the camps organized by Salo and Rantalainen, and thousands of new songs have been born. “The camp covers the basics of songwriting, while participants support and inspire one another. The creation of new songs is a shared joy for everyone,” says Heikki Salo.
At Saturday’s final concert, newly written songs will be performed, along with pieces from the course instructors Heikki Salo and Tuija Rantalainen. The concert, starting at 6 p.m., is free of charge.
